Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration (MD) is a retinal eye condition that creates a progressive loss of central vision. There are no cures available for MD, though there are certain treatments that can delay the progression of the disease, with the treatment being subject to the form of the MD (wet, dry or other) . Like any disease, the earlier detected, the better chance you have at retaining your vision.
Dry MD is developed when deterioration occurs in the centre of the retina, whereas Wet MD is caused by leaking blood vessels growing underneath the retina. Both conditions present as blurred vision and can only be diagnosed by an Optometrist.
MD can start to develop in your retina even before you experience any changes in your vision. Therefore, it is best to get your eyes checked regularly as detecting this disease before any symptoms emerge gives you the best chance at retaining your vision.
The Macular Disease Foundation Australia suggest being aware of the following symptoms:
-
Difficulty in reading or doing any other activity which requires fine vision
-
Distortion where straight lines appear wavy or bent
-
Distinguishing faces becomes a problem
-
Dark patches or empty spaces appearing in the centre of your vision
If you experience any of these symptoms, you should consult our Optometrist.
